Hawthorne, Calif. — In an effort to promote both spiritual and physical well-being, the Hawthorne Seventh-day Adventist Church’s Health & Temperance Department is inviting members and the community to participate in a 21-day Daniel Fast from March 8 to 29.

The initiative aims to encourage participants to draw closer to God through prayer while embracing a healthier lifestyle inspired by the biblical account of Daniel, who abstained from rich foods in favor of simple, plant-based nourishment.

A Three-Week Commitment to Health and Prayer

The fast is structured in three progressive stages:

  • Week One focuses on eliminating all forms of sugar, limiting salt intake, drinking at least 64 ounces of water daily, and committing to prayer three times a day.
  • Week Two builds on the first by eliminating meat and meat substitutes while encouraging the consumption of nuts, grains, and beans.
  • Week Three deepens the challenge by including a personal fast from a specific struggle, avoiding unhealthy fats, and incorporating beneficial fats such as avocados, olives, nut butter, and olive oil.

Organizers believe the fast offers an opportunity for holistic renewal, allowing participants to reflect on their spiritual journey while prioritizing their health.

Rooted in Scripture

The fast is inspired by Ezra 8:23, which states: “So we fasted and prayed about this, and He answered our prayer.” Church leaders hope this spiritual discipline will strengthen faith and cultivate a greater sense of community among participants.
